The number of refugees has doubled over the past 10 years and will continue to increase, with an expected 1.2 billion people displaced globally by 2050 due to climate change and natural disasters.ĭiversity is central to success, and we’re so grateful to our refugee employees for making Amazon a better and stronger company. That number grows to more than 110 million with the inclusion of internally displaced people – more than 1% of the total global population. There are currently more than 35M refugees worldwide. To mark World Refugee Week, Amazon employees will also be volunteering to pack an estimated 50,000 hygiene kits for displaced people, which will be distributed through local charity partners across Europe. On this World Refugee Day, we’re announcing our commitment to hiring at least 5,000 refugees in Europe by the end of 2026, and reaffirming a goal to provide training to 10,000 Ukrainians through the ITSkills4U program. We're committed and ready to lend support through even the worst of times. Thanks to our teams, NGO partners and the Amagasaki City government for working to build this together. It will enable us to swiftly distribute over 15,000 essential supplies within 72 hours, including traditional local items like Japanese folding fans, and solar-powered generators that don't emit any smoke or smell. The facility, located in the area where the devastating Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake took place in 1995, is a dedicated space within our logistics network to store and quickly pack items that are most needed following earthquakes, damaging storms and other emergencies. The hub will help us quickly respond to calamities in the region, and is an especially meaningful initiative for us because we've been a part of the Japanese community for 23 years. We’ve just set up our first Disaster Relief Hub in Japan, a country that is one of the world's most vulnerable to natural disasters.
